Mystery Monday: a touring bodied car in Sumatra

A new week has started and we begin this week with a mystery car photographed in Sumatra. It is sent in by Thomas Marinus Both, from Switzerland. He told us that he is a frequent reader of Prewarcar.com and after seeing the latest "About what is it quiz 437" it reminded him of picture that he found in a family album. "It was taken around 1929 in Malomboe in the by then Dutch colony Sumatra where my grandfather Marinus Evert Both had spent some time before returning to the Netherlands to become a dentist in Bussum. The picture shows my grandfather (white suit, to the right) standing right next to a car which I have not been able to identify so far. My first thought was Fiat, but the angle of the radiator top, the hexagonal (?) radiator badge and the louvres in the bonnet look different compared to the contemporary Fiat models. Also the top line of the radiator looks curved instead of straight."

Can you tell what car it is?

Definitely an ESSEX. Year, I don't know. If its a white radiator badge its a 27. Rough guess, about 28.

it looks for me as a Alfa Romeo 6C 1500, with as far as I can see the right badge on the radiator and Bosch headlights
year around 1926- 1928

One should not be surprised to see early American cars with right hand drive in these parts of the world where almost all countries drive RHD. American companies supplied accordingly from USA or from Canada. German cars also were supplied RHD. Such cars became very rare by default.

"Essex" would both suit the character and location of this photograph.

Certainly an Essex, but presumably one that was assembled in the U.K. and equipped with a body from a local manufacturer.

Lots of them were also sold on the continent, hence it's possible that the Essex on the photo came to Sumatra together with his owner from the Netherlands...

This is an Essex Six Touring car, 1924 or early 1925. The radiator shell was chrome-plated after mid-1925. Interesting points are right hand drive, a bulb horn (was the Klaxon too loud?) and the highlighted molding strip along the body side. The latter doesn't seem to have been a factory offering, so there's a possibility this is not a factory body. The front bumper, however, was a factory option.
