The hazards of traffic are of all times. Showing is a detail of a statue made in 1937 by the Dutch artist Dirk Wolbers. It was devoted to safety in traffic. Symbolised by a mother keeping her son & daughter from crossing the road. As a little boy Rutger Booy used to pass the statue by city-tram (website Marcel Tettero) and pushed his nose against the window to see the speeding cars at the foot of the statue. Recently Rutger did research in the Hague and found there was a lot of criticism on the statue when new. People found the cars were made too big to be toys and too little to be symbolic (we can agree on that...). But never the critics were so harsh that they dreamed of what happened 20 years later. The sculptor was killed by a truck when crossing the street... (story & photos Rutger Booy) ..... Do you have a great story and photo to match? write to [email protected].
