In 1924 William Morris founded a new company for the manufacture of trucks, Morris Commercial Cars ltd. Until then Morris had only made small vans but he did foresee a ready market for larger commercial vehicles. His first truck was called the T-Type 1-ton van. To prove its reliability, a promotional journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats was successfully completed with the engine running non-stop. The car pictured here is one of the first 700 T-Type vans produced and its present owner was sufficiently inspired by Morris’s achievement that he wanted to prove such an undertaking could still be done. So in August 1999 he also drove his van from Land’s End to John O’Groats, starting and finishing his journey in Woking, Surrey. A total of 2,139 miles were covered, taking two weeks, at an average speed of 25mph. This T-Type 1-ton van, that has been renovated rather than fully restored, will be among several antique and classic cars on auction tomorrow at BCA Blackbushe. It looks a wonderful opportunity to acquire a real ‘working’ vehicle. (photo’s courtesy BCA Classic Auctions). (RB)
