Norah, by Fred Steerwood

Several years ago we photographed this print of a Morris Calendar at the Beaulieu Autojumble. Being very interested in the life and work of motoring artist Fred Steerwood, we immediately recognised the magazine the girl is holding as a copy of the Morris Owner of which the front cover was painted by him. We didn’t buy the print because we thought the calendar itself was not painted by Steerwood. Only recently we began to have second thoughts when looking at one of the personal pictures of Fred Steerwood, where he poses with his sister-in-law Norah. Now, she’s a very attractive woman and Steerwood being an artist, why wouldn’t he have used her as a model? There’s certainly a striking similarity between Norah and the Calendar Girl. We are now kicking ourselves in the butt for not having bought the calendar!

Fred Steedwood didn't marry Norah. In 1918 he married Dorothy Shaw and when she died in 1959, he married again, this time to Irene Browning, the widow of his younger brother Walter.

I liked the comment about kicking ourselves in the butt for so called "missed opportumities". Many of us could be fit for hospital.
Every collector of anything will always have such experiences. And there is something called fate, "meant to be" which we can console ourselves with.
Because of such situations, today I sometimes do pay ridiculous amounts of money for a collectable which I feel I may never see again.
So be it. But I can also narate a tale about a 1959 Dodge Custom Royal Coupe which was offered to me twice, refused, bought for me by a friend who went to buy cars for me with my money, berated him for doing that, and today am more than glad. It taught me to make studied decisions which should not to be regretted later, but these things still happen.

Cheers harit

It was still for sale at Beaulieu this year - you may still have a chance! Can't remember where, but there somewhere. Now why does that sound familiar.....?

True, she is very attractive which is why I believe that they married later on.
