Ferrari on PreWarCar? Why, we can hear you grumble, the make is only sixty years old. Yes, you’re right of course, only the emblem is much older. The black prancing horse supposedly comes from a medieval weapon shield. It was used as an emblem on the fighter plane of World War I ace Francesco Baracca, also from Ravenna. He died in 1918 when his SPAD was shot down. When Enzo Ferrari won a race in Ravenna in 1923, the shield with the black prancing horse was presented to him by Baracca’s parents. Enzo added the yellow background, because it was the colour of his birthplace Modena. At first he only used the emblem on the stationary of his “Scuderia Ferrari”. The horse first appeared on a racing car at the 1932 race at Spa, won by Taruffi and D’Ippolito. After the war the emblem appeared on all Ferrari’s in a slightly modernised version. The sixty years of Ferrari production will be celebrated at the Interclassics and Topmobiel Car Show, to be held from January 11 to January 13 in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Sixty of the most famous Ferrari’s will be on show and you can find the PreWarCar stand amidst these mighty Ferrari’s. Look for stand W46. Not able to come?
