Peaks of the Andes or Patagonia? Choose your next classic car adventure

Letter to the editor
How can one truly describe the experience of driving a classic car at altitudes higher than Mont Blanc, then spending 10 days between 3,500 and 4,300 metres in a landscape of stark desolation, surrounded by volcanoes, some still active? Traversing vast salt flats, drifting from one shimmering salt lake to the next, occasionally spotting flamingos. Encountering llamas and alpacas. And always beneath an endless, deep blue sky.

There are no words that can fully capture this experience, yet this is the lasting impression that participants of past Peaks of the Andes rally have taken home. And this is without even mentioning other moments equally breathtaking: the border crossing between Chile and Argentina, driving at 2,800 metres through a world of partially frozen, snow-draped lakes; the challenge of Argentina’s rugged terrain; the charm of visiting vineyards and classic car collections. And, of course, wherever we go, we receive the warmest of welcomes. Classic cars still work their magic in South America!

We are now considering running an identical rally in October 2026. However, some past participants have expressed a preference for a rally through Patagonia instead; travelling from Valparaíso to Puerto Madryn in Argentina. A completely different adventure, even wilder, even more desolate. From fjords to glaciers, from towering mountains to the vast, windswept pampa, with even fewer traces of civilisation and even more raw, untamed nature. This event would take place in January 2027.

Both rallies would last nearly four weeks and be open to both pre-war and classic cars up to 1970. We offer a relaxed rally experience, covering a maximum of 350 km per day, not an endurance rally, but an opportunity to fully absorb the scenery, connect with local people, and savour the journey.

But which rally should we organise? The choice is yours. Depending on your interest, we will bring one of these plans to life.

A dream every day and 25 days of dreams. We enjoyed extraordinary panoramas and a very nice atmosphere in our group. It was a very beautiful adventure with its moments of doubt, fear and happiness; in short, a brilliant scenario. Thank you, Bart.

Hi Gerald,

Finishing in Bahia Blanca or Mar del Plata would only add some very boring driving along main roads and require us to continue to Buenos Aires in order to ship our cars (and find and airport to fly from ourselves). I'm curious as to what others think of a minimum of 35 days.

The Peaks of the Andes was a great adventure. The nature of countries like Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru is extraordinary. However, a trip to the vast emptiness of Patagonia all the way up to the last frontier of the world must be like a dream come true. The quality of life does not come from nice hotels or a five-star meal but exists more as feeling alive and being one with nature.

Driving through one of the most beautiful and desolate parts of the world in a pre-war car does not just tick one but at least two boxes on my bucket list. Hope to see you all at the start in January, 2027!

Pre-war cars are very welcome but classic cars up to 1970 are also very much welcome. Here are some pictures from past Peaks of the Andes and a picture from a potential participant with his Porsche in Patagonia.

If the Patagonia Tour, I would suggest a minimum of 35 days to cover the costs of getting there in the first place. Take more rest days to explore surrounding areas, with interesting activities, and end up higher up in Argentina at, say, Bahia Blanca or Mar del Plata.
