'Pre-eminent Among The World’s Finest Cars'

Chris 'Lanchester' Clark sends this photo and elaborated request:"In 1939, King George VI ordered two new cars: both 4.5 litre, Straight-8 Lanchesters. One a limousine, the other a landaulette, these giants were just under 19 feet long. Sixty five years ago they were grand, yet elegant, cars ‘fit for a King’ indeed; sadly, by no stretch of the imagination could that phrase be used to describe them today! Why did the King order Lanchesters in 1939, when everyone knows that Daimlers were the royal cars? Well, ever since the 1920s.....
