PreWarCars at the African GP

When one dear reader sent us not 1 but a batch of 22 pictures of PreWarCars on a track, we knew it was something unusual. And it was. These photographs were in fact taken back on January 1st, 1968 when the Grand Prix of South-Africa was held at the Kyalami circuit. But while the world focused on the race with its Lotus-Fords, McLaren-BRMs and Cooper-Maseratis, the driver parade preceding the race was perhaps least as interesting.

Here we saw the drivers, all 22 of them with their names spelled out to the public, being ferried around the track in historical motors, probably sourced from the Veteran Car Club of South-Africa or the S-A Vintage Sports Car Club.

It’s nice to see that some of these cars fit in particularly well with the nationality of the drivers, although others don’t seem to fit in that pattern. Most of these cars are fairly easy to identify, we think, although there may be one or two exceptions. Who recognizes them all..?

In alphabetical order, the drivers are:

1. Andrea de Adamich

2. Chris Amon

3. Jean-Pierre Beltoise

4. Jo Bonnier

5. Jack Brabham

6. Dave Charlton

7. Jim Clark

8. Dan Gurney

9. Graham Hill

10. Denny Hulme

11. Jackie Ickx

12. John Love

13. Jackie Pretorius

14. Brian Redman

15. Jochen Rindt

16. Pedro Rodriguez

17. Basil van Rooyen

18. Ludovico Scarfiotti

19. Joseph Siffert

20. Jackie Stewart

21. Mike Spence

22. Sam Tingle
