Last Tuesday it was one hundred years ago that General Motors came into being. The Ford Motor Company congratulated them by illuminating the windows of their World HQ with this special message. And that’s not as strange as it may seem because there was a Ford at the start of GM. Henry Ford was thrown out of the Henry Ford Company in 1902 after a clash with William Murphy and Henry M. Leland. Henry Ford took 900 dollars in cash settlement and his designs for a racing car, but not the plans for the production car. The company was rechristened the Cadillac Automobile Company. They took Henry Ford’s plans, removed the engine and replaced it with one designed by Leland. The Cadillac was a bestseller and in 1909 became the flagship of the General Motors Corporation. But originally it was a Ford! (photo by Sam VarnHagen, courtesy Ford Motor Co.)
