VW type 30 ready for testing

Seventy-five years ago, in March/April 1937 a series of 30 prototypes of Volkswagen were built at Daimler-Benz. There had been single hand-built prototypes before, but this was a series of cars that was to be severely tested. They were known as the VW 30 series, designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche.  Note that it already has the headlamps mounted in the wings, but there is still no rear window. Each test car was at least driven for 50.000 miles and the lessons learnt were incorporated in the next bunch of test cars, the VW 38. None of the VW 30 prototypes remain, all have been destroyed by the SS, although there is a later reconstruction of the VW 30.

Some of my very earliest motoring memories are of our 1946 VW Sedan which still had several features of the KdF. I notice on the VW38 website that some of the restored cars are not quite correct as regards bumper/over rider set ups and one has incorrect later hubcaps which shows that getting original parts must now be very difficult. I would love to have one now despite the cable brakes, oil fume heater and potentially worrying handling which at the time was thought to be rather good! I must visit those museums next year.
