Those of us not present at the Concours d'Elegance in Schwetzingen have really missed a spectacular event. An international jury of thirty experts had a difficult time to select the winners from more than 160 entrants. Finally they declared the pristine 1902 De Dion-Bouton Phaeton of Erich Haller from Switzerland winner of the FIVA class A. Second came Ewald Rehberger from Germany with his unique 1903 Cottereau 5 HP "Basquets de tulipe". The class D victory went to Francesco Bonfanti from Italy with his marvellous Alfa 6 C 2500 Touring Coupé. Francesco was given an extra applause because his trailer broke down in the alps so he had to drive his Alfa through rain and wind to Schwetzingen. This Gran-Tourismo-effort did not hinder him to display a car of highest international standard. One of the displays at the Concours was the celebration of eighty years of Volvo in Germany. "Best Volvo of Show" was the 1933 Volvo 655 Norrmalm convertible, presented by Prof. Tomas Soederberg of Kallered in Sweden. Only 62 cars of this model have been built and his convertible is the only one surviving of its type. More results of the concours can be found on the website of the Oldtimer-Gala and don’t forget to jot down the dates for next year: 6th and 7th of September 2008. (photos Hans van Ingen Schenau) (RB)
UPDATE by Lars-Göran Lindgren: “The Volvo PV655 was the bare chassis version of the PV653/654 4-door sedans. It is correct that 62 PV655 were built, but most of them had commercial bodies, as pickups and ambulances. Only a few were cabriolets, Norrmalm built two during 1933 and I can not remember anymore at the moment...”
