Special issue Jaeger mystery (Upd. Avions Voisin!)

Mark Miller reports: "I have just aquired an 8 day French Jaeger cream dialed car clock as seen in the photos which I have fitted, in place of the standard Jaeger clock, to my 1927 Bugatti T37A. This on its own is nothing special but what attracted me specifically to this one was the writing, in red, accross the dial. It is in French and is obviously totally original to the clock and reads as follows "Laissez chauffer l'huile 10 minutes avant de marcher plein regime", which I think roughly translated means "Heat the oil, leave 10 minutes before proceeding full speed". I have never seen a clock with this inscription before and as my Bugatti most certainly requires warming up before driving it seems to fit perfectly. Does anyone know if these were made this way for any specific car or were they an extra that could be bought. Certainly seems to be aimed at use with a racing engine."

... and let's remember that the Voisin manual (obviously written by Gabriel himself) said that "PLEIN REGIME" in une Avoins Voisin san soupapes was 4000 RPM .... no slouch for a 2-bearing crank and double sleeve valves in steel.

4050 tours and you've just blown your warranty ;-)

Oh, and when you change the oil in the sump (whovever told you Knich engines burn the lot?) the Meastro tells the uniwtting owner to tip the used sump oil into the fuel tank... early environmentalism from a pioneer aviation ace

I'm not sure about his aero engines, but Gabriel Voison managed to get remarkable performance from his sleeve valve car engines, partly by reducing the number of main bearings to make them free- running. Control of oil temperature in such engines was vital.

I've always heard since I was a kid, that a Bugatti's oil had to be heated before it would start. Heating the petrol probably wouldn't hurt, either.
