St. Louis only. (UPDATE: the Arch)

The Kemp Auto Museum (located near St. Louis, Missouri) has organized an exhibit of locally manufactured automobiles. Some of the cars belong to the permanent collection of the Kemp Museum itself; others, among them this 1924 Moon series A Touring car, are on loan for the duration of the exhibition that will last until the end of October 2007. The main feature is of course the 1904 St. Louis built by the St. Louis Motor Carriage Company founded in 1899. This car was originally purchased by Douglas S. Watson of San Francisco. According to an article in the November 12, 1904 edition of The Automobile, Watson and three others embarked on a trip to Yosemite National Park shortly after purchasing this St Louis. Upon their arrival in the park, they were informed that this was only the sixth vehicle, out of 116 which had started, to successfully enter Yosemite Valley and that they were the first amateur drivers to make such a "foolish and ruinous attempt." Their 500 mile round trip passed without mechanical problems other than a flat tire and a broken "driving shaft" while ascending a 15 percent grade. Gasoline had to be ordered by telegraph and delivered by stagecoach into the valley. (photos courtesy Kemp Auto Museum) (RB)
