Sunshine just in time for Salon Privé

Apparently the summer in England this year has not been a bad one at all. Certainly not as hot as the legendary heatwave of 1976, but passable nonetheless in this the country's first Brexit season. I should have arrived in the country sooner, because the start of Autumn was a shocker. Arriving on 3rd September was a few days late for sunshine but fortunately just in time for Salon Privé at Blenheim Palace, birthplace of the redoubtable Englishman, Sir Winston Churchill.

The 11th Edition of Salon Privé, and the second year on the trot at the spectacular baroque Palace may not have been blessed with great weather but there were certainly some fabulous motor cars on display, from modern hypercars, a host or rare classics and racers, and a notable collection of pre-war cars. Included amongst the latter was the gorgeous 1924 Alfa Romeo RL Normale seen at Villa d'Este earlier this year. With its Coaba wood body by J.Farré it is still totally original and has never been restored. Another pre-war vehicle to catch the eye was the 1923 Voisin C6. Nicknamed the 'Laboratoire' due to its numerous technical innovations, it really demonstrates just how similar was car and plane design in the early days of of both their developments.

Blenheim Palace was designated as a World Heritage site by the United Nations in 1987, and it is high time some of the cars present at this remarkable venue, should also be protected in a similar way.

The author of this friendly article was clearly not in time for Salon Prive and I question if he actually was there at all! Salon Prive started on September 1st with a grand Concours d'Elegance in splendid weather. Runner up to Best of Show was a gorgeous 1934 RR Phantom 2 with 4 door convertible body by Hooper especially built for Nubar Gulbenkian ( mr 5 percent) and best of show the beautifully restored 1956 Ferrari Testarossa that participated in the 1956 Nassau speed races and 1957 Cuban Grand Prix. The Alfa Romeo RL Normale with striking coachwork by Farre did not attend due to engine problems. The owner nevertheless showed a largely unrestored prewar Jaguar as shown in your picture!
