The 1909 Thornycroft picnic project (UPDATE: Basingstoke)

Martin Shelley is busy on a tempting SCAT project and mentioned in the sideline his 'other old car project'. A very rare 1909 Thornycroft tourer. The photo (click it for detail) shows the car in better times and Martin wil have to lean heavily on this shot for recreating the tourer coachwork...:" It's a 1909 18HP Thornycroft, of which there is only one other example, and mine was owned when new by a very famous Australian cattleman, Sir Sidney Kidman, who at the time he owned the Thornycroft, also owned over 100,000 square miles of land in Australia, which is actually a larger area than the whole of the British Isles!!! We recently found pictures of the car when almost new, with his family on a picnic outing near Adelaide where they lived. I attach it for your interest. I can hardly believe that I now own the car in the picture, albeit with no bodywork and a lot of mechanical work to be done also..." (check current state of affairs...)
UPDATE by Michael Ware:"The Milstones Museum in Basingstoke (UK) hold many Thornycroft records (the cars were built in that town; 1903-1913) and they are always interested to know of other models in the world."
