It's that time of the year again already. Time to get your entries in for the only event exclusively for unrestored cars, The Automobile magazine's Oily Rag Run. This year's event, to be held in the weekend of 28th-29th September, will be the fifth, and each year it has got bigger and better as the cult of originality has taken over the old-car movement. More and more pre-war motorcars are coming out of mothballs to take to the road with defiantly cracked paintwork, worn leather and unlacquered wood. Yes, just like the 1909 Léon Bollée pictured above.
This year, Sir William McAlpine is throwing open the doors of his private railway, Fawley Hill in Oxfordshire, for a full day of steam locomotion. He has run the mile-long track since 1961 and only opens the gates for a few select events a year. There will also be a visit to Nuffield Place – former home of William Morris, Lord Nuffield – plus more besides. There are already some Dutch entries, but will anyone else from Europe take up the challenge to drive their Oily Rags to England for a weekend with a group of like-minded enthusiasts? Check out the latest issue of the magazine or send an email to Scott Barrett.
