The mystery behind Ted Newstead

We received the following letter:

“My Father has recently passed away and I came across this picture whilst sorting through his things. The people are my Uncle Ted Newstead and his Father David. Ted ran a coachwork company in Waterloo Road, Epsom, Surrey and I guess that this is a customer’s car. My observations are that it has a low bonnet line (for the time) so possibly a ‘V’ or ‘flat’ configuration engine and that a section of the wing appears to be attached to the door. But I don’t understand how this works at the hinge side which Ted is, unfortunately, standing in front of!

Ted had a Ford model Y 8hp, which I think is the car in the background. I believe the photo was taken in the mid-1930s. Can anyone identify the car in the picture?”

Please comment below if you can tell Steve more about the PreWarCar we see in the picture (click to enlarge). Maybe someone can also explain to him the mystery behind Ted.

Scott, thank you very much. What a design for 1928.

This is a 1928 Alfa Romeo 6C 1500, registered MPG 726. The car still exists, in the UK, albeit now with more period-appropriate coachwork. It is owned by well-known Alfa historian Angela Cherrett. Attached is an advert for the car from 1949. Personally, I think it would be much more interesting if this coupé body had been retained...

It looks like a French built Talbot from the 1930s

If it was in the 1930s it can't be a Bristol, but it could be a BMW 326 or 327
