The mystery of King Rama VI of Thailand

We hope you all had a good weekend. The beginning of a new week means another Monday Mystery for you to solve. Actually, we would like to know whether we are on the wavelength.

In the photograph, we see King Rama VI of Thailand, the owner of this Pre-War Car. He was the King of the Chakri-Dynasty from 1910 until 1925. The photo is taken during his visit to the Donmuang Airbase in 1916.

We think the car we see is probably a Napier. Can it be a 40/50 HP? Do you think this is correct? Please comment below and tell us everything you know about the Pre-War Car of King Rama VI.

If you go to Bangkok the Air Museum at Donmuang is well worth a visit.

Don Muang was the main airport for Bangkok until a few years ago and was built by the British RAF after the Japanese were driven from Thailand, not sure if you know the story about why Thailand drives on the left ( RHD cars) , the story I am told is that Rama V ( King of Thailand ) was told that the French and British were planning to annex Siam ( as Thailand was then known), so he called all the ambassadors from every country to a Banquet where is informed everyone of the British/French plans, everyone was up in arms, the French/British said they were only doing this to help the Siamese/Thai people with plans to build a proper government, hospital, judiciary etc in Siam , to which the wily Rama V, said let me send my sons to see how you do this in Europe, his son ( who became Rama VI as pictured) was sent to England and purchased his first car, which was eventually shipped to Siam/Thailand, hence the right hand drive? I once found a Datsun in Chang Mai in an underground car park and it was an Austin 7 made under licence in Japan pre WW2

While we are on the topic of Napiers, I would like to know if there is a historian for these cars I can pass some information to regarding Vancouver? I have found about twenty photos on local archives of Napiers in BC. I have also found photos of the purpose built dealership building opened in 1910. This was constructed of concrete and was Vancouver's first fire proof building. It was two stories high. about 66ft x 130ft and had it's own petrol pump with an underground tank.

Hi Steve, The Napier historian here in Australia who has been keeping archives on them is Bill Bishop. He has over the years written articles that have been published in PreWarCar magazine. He has asked me to pass on his contact to you. Please sent an email to office at prewarcar.com for his contactdetails.

I tend to agree with Tony. I have a 1912 (3rd. June manufactured) 30 hp Type T43 6cyl. 3 1/4" by 5". The Type 44 1913 30/35 was 3 1/2" by 5". Which is what the one in the photo looks like.

As I am particually interested in Napiers having a 1904 example, I agree with the above it is a Napier 30/35hp but I think slightly earlier at c1913/14.

My guess is: NOT a 40/50, but a c. 1914/15, 6 cyl 30/35hp Type 68 Colonial Napier. It has what looks to be a CAV Dynastart fitted between the dumbirons.
