The Rovin Racer Mystery

If we were given a chance to try and race this little cyclecar, would we turn our back like this young lady does? Certainly not! And we're glad to say neither does she, because here she is again. But of course you are wondering what racing car she is demonstrating here. Certainly you have heard of the small cars that the French brothers Raoul and Robert de Rovin built from 1946 until 1961 in their factory at the old Delaunay-Belleville works. But before the war they constructed and raced cyclecars and motorbikes. As far as we know Raoul and his younger brother Robert made only six cyclecars and this is one of them, so it is quite rare. Almost thirty years ago it was found in a cow pasture in Lorraine, France where it had been resting for twenty years. Fifty years on, it is still in the same condition, although today it hangs on the wall of the owners garage to save space. But we would like to know what happened to the other five Rovin Racers, are they still around? And what is their history? Can you tell us more?

According to Jacques Potherat in his book Bolides de l'age d'or 1920-1940 Raoul Pégulu de Rovin (he was a marquis) was already making the Rovin motorcycle in the 1920s when he started to build very tiny racing cars from 1926. Between this year en 1930 Rovin managed to set several records in class 1 (cars with engines between 350 and 500 cc). Rovin took part in his own car in the 1927 Bol d'Or (racing 24 hours without copilot!).
The Rovin cars were mentioned and shown regularly in the French magazine Moto Revue of the periode (in 1925 on page 844, in 1927 there is a picture on page 310), but alas I do not have copies of this magazine myself.
The postwar Rovin car was built by a younger brother of Raoul.

I find it a little sad that this car and cars like this are hidden away and not returned to driving condition .
They need to be seen at events , not hidden away

editor: maybe it is a comfort to you to learn this car will come to the market not too long form now.
