The Sanders & Sons Mystery

Way back in 1875 the coachbuilding business of Ralph E Sanders & Sons was established in Royston, Hertfordshire. In 1898 they moved to nearby Hitchin and again in 1907 transferring to new purpose-built premises in Walsworth Road. From ca. 1905 tot 1925 Sanders & Sons built all types of bespoke bodies - saloons, sports tourers, landaulets, as well as commercial van and bus bodies. By the 1930s the company had changed to selling manufacturers complete vehicles. The photograph shows a Sanders sporting body on a Cottin & Desgouttes racing chain drive chassis, just one example of the quality workmanship of this company.
Steve Bradford-Best is helping the Sanders family in publishing a book about their coachbuilding business. They already have a wealth of documentary and photographic records but so far have been unable trace a surviving vehicle. Do you have a car with a body by Sanders, know of one or remember one? Steve would love to publish its story in the book. Contact us!

Is there any evidence at all that Sanders & Sons bodied Oakland cars. I am researching a particular model and anything would help.

They also built a tourer on a Large Cottin-Desgouttes Chassis in 1911; one of their last bodies was a limousine on a 1924 Morris Oxford."
