The Trackless Train

Remember our recent article and photo about the Isotta Fraschini? In the back of the photo was a big limousine, that was used for advertising. It was quickly identified as a Graham-Paige, but Uffe Mortensen from Denmark came up with a whole lot more information about these strange automobiles. There have been several of them, all designed by Harry McGee from the USA. A standard Graham-Paige chassis was modified with a locomotive body, cow catcher and an observation platform at the rear. Called the ‘Trackless Train’, McGee used it at first to advertise his own company, but then sold it to MGM who campaigned it all over the world to promote their motion pictures. After that McGee seems to have built another fourteen or fifteen ‘trackless trains’ with some of them on a Dagmar or Cord chassis. It must have quite a sight, especially with the smoke coming out of the smoke stacks. This was done by dropping crude oil into the exhaust manifold, which was then conveyed to the smoke stack through a small pipe. In the smoke stack were revolving blades causing the smoke to come out in puffs instead of a steady stream. One of these trackless trains was recently for sale here on PreWarCar and we wonder if any more exist?

My name is Gene Calman and I am the owner of the sound train that was displayed at Ironstone in Murphys CA last year. I purchased the car in 1989 after chasing it off and on for 27 years. It has been in San Diego since 1942. I did extensive restoration on it and I think it is the same one shown advertising the Mayan theater in LA. Incidentally that one is advertising the Townsend Plan which promised $ 30 every Thursday and was very much in the news before WW II. I have seen all of the 4 other GPSound Trains and know the location of the ugly one which was built on a 28 or 29 Cadillac. I show mine quite a bit and it is presently on display at the S D Automotive Museum for the rest of the month I'll be glad to talk to anyone interested in these cars, I have quite a bit of information and met the son of Mc Gee on several occasions

There is a recent picture of another one of these here

http://www.conceptcarz.com/z18238/Graham-Paige-Sound-Train.aspx

and here

http://www.remarkablecars.com/for-sale/showproduct.php?product=33807

that was at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in 2010.

A separate extensive picture collection here of another version here

http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2010/09/san-diego-1929-graham-paige-sound-train.html

A story in USA Today on 9 November 2010 with follow-up on 10 November 2010 states that at least three others in addition to the one they picture are known to exist.

A short article with pictures here

http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2008/12/1929-graham-paige-sound-train-and-mgm.html

along with one that is likely not a Graham-Paige here

Finally there is a Coachbuilt article here

http://www.coachbuilt.com/bui/m/mcgee/mcgee.htm

which discusses with further details about the manufacturer, Harry O. McGee Mfg. Co. - 1910s-1940s - in Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S.A.

I saw the bumblebee colored 'trackless train' at the Ironstone Concours this last September in Murphys CA. It was massive and carrying a face only a mother could love. I shall dig up some photographs I took of the car. Great article. BTW I am in love with your website.

A little bit of trivia on Graham-Paige. These cars were assembled in India in the late 1920's, and very popular among taxi drivers in Calcutta for their small turning circle. Now there are only about 5 known survivors in India. I have a photo of the assembly plant, if it can called that. No trackless trains known to have reached India.
