The Union Jack Mystery (Lots of Updates: Standard, but 1921, 1923 or 1925?)

This picture just oozes atmosphere, the light, the wall, it all looks very well composed. It was sent to us by Toby Ross asking about the make of this automobile. We are sure the four-seater must be familiar to us, although for the moment its marque seems to escape us. It looks like a very common automobile, but its most distinctive feature is of course the grille with its emblem of the British flag, which must surely be a clue to its origins. Please click the main pic and help us remember what this is!

The Standard is a 1921 model SLO, 11.6 H.P. tourer, with the 4 cylinder, overhead valve, 1598 cc engine. Yes, the majority of cars built on this chassis were of the two seater and dickey type, however, a four seater tourer was also offered. The SLO model was built between 1920 - 1922 and was superseeded in 1922 by the 1944 cc SLO4 model which remained in production until 1926.

I believe this is an SLO- 4. This larger SLO was introduced in February 1922 and discontinued in 1924. The '4' had a 9ft 8in chassis and earlier SLO's only 9ft- the car shown almost certainly has the long wheelbase. Also photos I have seen of earlier SLO's show only 3 bonnet (hood) louvres, and when R J Davy wrote his book on the marque (long ago, in 1967) all known early SLO survivors were 2 seaters. However by 1924 the bonnet line was 'flatter' than this one and loop- type handles had generally been replaced by straight ones, so this is probably a 1922 model- possibly a 1923. The 4 cylinder engine was 1,944cc, 75 x 90mm, (13.9hp) and had overhead valves. Given that 'common' also means 'popular' you would be right, since 4,000 were made in 1923, which was a lot for Britain at that time. The four seat tourer was known as the 'Warwick' and it cost £450.

It's a Standard, the marque adopted Union Jack as a part of it's identity in 1908. The car in the picture is from about 1923.

The clue could indeed be the union flag. Is it a Standard? Graham

The car is a Standard, possibly 9.5 HP. Despite the antiquated door handle, it is probably immediately post WWI (say, 1919 or 1920). The Union Flag was a well-known feature of radiators of this make.

Think this is a Standard 13.9HP of around 1923 or maybe a year or two later. It states in Georgano's Encyclopedia Of Motorcars that from 1923 thes cars carried the emblem of the 9th Roman Legion on the radiator. Looking at the photograph the car appears to have one of these fitted. Just my guess.
