Too modern for 1898?

We hope you all had a good weekend. Did everyone who participated in the Veteran Car Run yesterday made it to Brighton? We hope you all had a great day and did not get too wet. Today we are NOT going to talk about the BREXIT, just for a change! It is time for another Monday Mystery!

This is a picture sent in by Jean-Yves Lassaux from France. The man in the car is one of his ancestors but is unrecognisable. This doesn't matter as we can now fully focus on the car. We would like to identify the vehicle. On the back of the picture is written "1898". But Jean-Yves thinks the car might be too "modern" for that year. What do you think? The first make that crossed our mind is Darracq Bollee.

Please comment below if you have any information regarding the vehicle in the picture. Your help would be highly appreciated.

This is one of the images I have in my archive. The (original?) immatriculation number 315-P can be dated at 1902.

The big question now is: is this car still around?

I remember seeing a similar car in Cave Ludovic de Beausejour two years but unfortunately cannot find back the photo I made.

So, in summary this car is probably a Bollée quadricycle with water-cooled engine and around 1900... Well, I was right: this car was too “modern” for 1898!
Thanks again. ;-)

The A. Bos is absolutely right! This is a further development of Quadricycle and Darracq-Bollee cars. You can see photos of this car and Leon Bollee himself in the book "Il etait une fois... les Bolee hommes de legendes". I think it's 1900 or 1901. But not 1898.

The original Léon Bollée quadricycle, introduced end of 1899, had the air-cooled engine with hot tube ignition like the voiturette. However I have a scanned copy of a Léon Bollée catalogue, probably from a later date in 1900, in which the engine already is water-cooled. Moreover I have several images of the quadricycle in my archive, all showing the cooling tube system. I vaguely remember that the air-cooled engine suffered from overheating, so that was apparently a necessary change.

Thanks a lot both of you for your help.
Great the chassis plans Ariejan! Agree with you the front suspension look similar to the Bollée quadricycle... But what bothers me is that the engine was air-cooled and my picture clearly show a radiator...?

For comparison I've uploaded the chassis plans of the Léon Bollée voiturette and quadricycle, and of the Darracq-Bollée, so you can check the differences yourself.

The gear lever arrangement looks similar to the one on our Leon Bollee Voiturette that Kate and Dave drove to Brighton yesterday. They started at 7am and got to Madiera Drive just before 4pm after some problems with a broken drive belt and the hot-tube ignition.

The vehicle is in fact the four-wheeled successor of the three-wheeled Léon Bollée voiturette. It was called a quadricycle and it was a light vehicle indeed. Technically it showed some similarity with its three-wheeled predecessor, but the whole arrangement of engine and gearbox a.o. was of course different. The quadricyle was launched in 1900 but never gained the popularity of its predecessor. The Darracq-Bollée voiturette, although built around the Léon Bollée patents, differed in technical design in many ways from the quadricycle.
