The Walter Miller Mysteries, Part I (update: Voisin C23 by Graber)

Walter Miller of the USA - a big name in car literature - sent us an intriguing series of mystery cars that we like to show you over the next few days. As all photos were printed from negatives of unknown source all pictures are of the family 'what you see what you get'.  Are we looking at a Derby Bentley with a vintage 3 litre radiator, or what? The wings look very Bentley-ish at least. Please also check the curvy louvre treatment on the side and top of the hood/bonnet. This type of louvres may be the 'signature' of the coachbuilder.

UPDATE: well as most of you - including Bruno Vendiesse - agree on Voisin C23 , probably bodied by Graber, we have little reason to doubt. So let's move on to the next....

UPDATE II by Editor:  Under comment #15 somebody writes that he may have some more photos of this car. The current owner likes to get in touch with you. Or at least hopes that you want to share this early photos of his car which is now under restoration in Holland.

I also think this is a Graber body, but, I wonder if maybe, it's on an 8c Alfa chassis.

It is indeed a Voisin C23 by Hermann Graber. I can only add that it's built in 1933. Following link shows the car in the right direction, thus RHD (russian website): http://www.m43.narod.ru/us_cars/publications/voisin_2.htm

A 3-litre, indeed - not a Bentley, but a Voisin C23 with coachwork by Graber of Switzerland.

During the 20's around Hollywood, CA there were a number of vintage cars bodies with radiators of the Voisin. This may have been done to look more "modern" or to mask the brand of the car, in this case Mercedes, likely 630K or similar. Note the radiator cap minus the "star" At least, that is my speculation.

Hello Joris, what a nice Voisin photograph ! Non factory body of course, could I suggest an open tourer by Graber on C23 (17cv) chassis ?

I wish it were in my garage!

As you can just see from the scarab motif beneath the filler cap, it's a Voisin - a C23, one of the few examples of the marque to be bodied by Graber.

Readers may be misled by the fact that the photo is reproduced the wrong way round, because no prewar Voisin was ever left-hand drive, of course.

How very interesting ! Car is left hand drive( unless photograph printed in reverse). Headlamps are of continental origin? Coachwork seems to me to be rather German or Austrian in appearance. Probably a trunk at rear, either separate or built-in. But the wheels look so English! Similar to those of an SS, or SS Jaguar (which might have been available in left hand drive form ). However, I wouldnt expect this coachwork to be later than 1934. The car has no number plates, & seems to be new. Although it is standing in a very wet & muddy location, there is no mud to be seen inside the rear mudguard. Perhaps at the back of the factory where it was either built or bodied ?
However, someone will have seen this photo before, with a description underneath ! Then we will know.
