A V4 twin ignition Mystery (spark-plug update)
Kees Koster sends this interesting V4, with double magneto and 2 spark plugs (no one sparkplug; see update below) for each cilinder. Size roughly 600 x 600 x 600 mm. The alloy valvegear covers give a modernish look to the concept. Early twenties? We wouldn't be surprised if it's a boat engine but that's only gut feeling. We gladly leave this all to you experts out there.
update: as Pete Giles remarks, the sparkplugs on the side are only to close the wholes that are water inlets with pipes attached. Still it is a twin ignition with two magneto's, one for each set of two cylinders. So only one sparkplug per cylinder...

Overhead inlet and side exhaust valve which is unusual. Presumably the carb is at the back of the engine and feeds the manifold in the middle of the V. I think the extra plugs just fill casting core plug holes as there seem to be large water outlets in the the V from the top of the cylinder heads. I wonder what those two pipes coming out of the front of the V are?

Those extra spark plus look like something inserted in to a casting plug, drain plug or tapping for a drain cock. Not convinced they should be there. Neither do the spark plus look period. Hmm. I'd say a small industrial engine, pump engine or the likes. Marine engines of this size don't work well with spark plugs, salt water and all. Diesel or hot bulb ignition worked better when ones life is dependent on it I could see a logic for twin spark in aircraft but this think never flew other then off a bench. Happy new Year to one and all never the less.

If it sits flat as shown it would suggest indeed a boat engine - but of course if it's simply that the sump is removed then perhaps not !!
Would be interesting to see the aft end to see the power take off...

the engine is simply industrial,it's easy
to see;it has never been fitted on a car that is the reason of the oiler on the front

Since when did an 18mm or similar tapped hole mean it had a spark plug in it? Its standard practice for priming holes to be tapped with a spark plug thread but you only ever insert a suitably threaded petcock into it!
However sometimes dual ignition is used, with the main plugs fired by a magneto and starting plugs fired by trembler coils.
Close inspection of the pic shows both a distributor and a mag platform so perhaps it used this arrangement. My 1909 Thornycroft has this exact arrangement, four cylinders and eight plugs...

The bosch oiler in front is typical for german 1920ies car engines and small engines for other use.

Those valve covers are a little bit like 1930's Coventry Climax parts fitted to the first four wheeler Morgans. But I would agree, the whole thing looks 1920's.
