Low autumn sun at VSCC Goodwood.

If you had turned up at Goodwood Circuit, in West Sessex UK on the 27th of October, you might have thought that it was a museum car outing on this classic old circuit. You would be forgiven for the mistake, but this is the annual visit to Goodwood for the VSCC Autumn Sprint. Goodwood is a fitting place for these vintage machines, very little has changed and the daunting high speed curves remain, lined with wooden fences and old buildings. On this very cold bright autumn day, with the sun very low in the sky, requiring a hand to block the sun and see down the track. The cold also didn't help the cars, radiators requiring gaffer tape and cardboard to help keeping heat in the engine. Many of the drivers haven't been around Goodwood before and with a map of the circuit, diagram of the best lines and a couple of practise laps in the morning. The final runs in the afternoon had its own problems, rain to add to the cold. 70 year old brakes are not the best, but in the rain! The cars may have looked like museum pieces, but the VSCC and its members are keeping our motoring heritage alive and racing and enjoying the heyday of motor-sport.  ( text & photography Tim Surman )

The Austin Seven looks more like one of the replica 1923 'Boulogne' cars - definitely not an Ulster!
