Ray Shaw sends this great racing pics. "They belonged to a gentleman who was a pilot in WWI, grew up in Kansas and lived in NYC and ConnecticuT. The location and participants in these photos are a mystery. What was the 'Jackson' referred to on the banner? " Well Ray your first question is easy. Jackson was a Michigan manufacturer from 1903-1923 with the great ad line 'No Sand too Deep, no Hill too High', see also the Standard Catalogue of American Cars 1805-1942. We found just one referral on the web saying that on 8-21-1909 Leigh Lynch drove a Jackson over 150 miles at Indianapolis, check RumbleDrome.com. But is this car # 81 in the foreground? The other car white #19, will most probably bring us the answer to date these photos exactly. That car is wildly famous, it's the Blitzen Benz, more specific the Lightning Benz as you can see from the detail photo in the drivers quarters ....next photo is a zoom-in on the Lightning Benz. This must be Barney Oldfield , check the fabulous FirstSuperSpeedway.com, where you can find another shot of car #19... The experts may jump in from here to tell what is the exact date and venue. UPDATE by Bob Rampton :"( editor: car #19) appeared in the May 8, 1910 edition of the Salt Lake Tribune, and shows Barney Oldfield as he gave his Benz "the gun" on the home stretch during a practice run at the state fair grounds dirt track in Salt Lake City. Oldfield took on all challengers during two days of exhibition racing. News paper articles indicated that Los Angeles, San Francisco and Reno were previous engagements. Oldfield appeared in Cheyenne, Wyoming on May 14, 1910. I believe the Blitzen photos were taken during Oldfield's 1910 tour. Notice the missing "Z" from the word Benz in all the photos. Perhaps due to a conflict between Oldfield and Benz over using the name...?"
