What is it? # 187

It's an electric omnibus like there have been so many around at the beginning of the last century. The photo was sent to us by an avid fan and sponsor of the website who was inspired by this weeks Baker/Locomobile mystery. His thought was that after the baker mystery of a few days back the minds are set to electricity and it is a good moment to run this one. So here we go. We see a streetcar of the year 1901 car with massive tyres and a belt drive which looks somewhat flimsy. A bit like the Meccano wind-up motor I used to have and which made use of a rubber band drive which only seemed able to slip. However the aristocratic looking driver seems quite confident about the machinery that is trusted to his hands. On his side an assistant to sell the tickets (we guess). We think the top compartment must have been nicely lighted in the evening and thus this modern means of transport would advertise itself while on the move. Now for you the only problem is to find out what is the make of this highly exclusive electric bus. It is not US made. It is not made in Germany. It is not Made in England. It is not 'Fabriqué en France'. And yes, it is not Made in Japan either. Just one more useless hint to add to your despair... The town in which it most probably ran has a subway system since a few years before World War II. The sender of this photo is so confident that you will not find the right answer that he challenges you and has offered an extra - substantial- prize for the winner of this quiz... Please feel free to send in rough guesses; we will not laugh! Enjoy weekend! [email protected]
