What is it? Quiz #365

A streamliner with highly characteristic tail design. So very few cars were out on the road similar to this that we don't want to give you a lot of hints. Except the fact that it is a european car and that it has a Cotal gearbox. So drain your brain, squeeze your memory and tell us all you know about it. Make. Year. Model/type. And anything relevant. Especially trivial details that are not easily to look up on the web will result in high scores.

Do you want to have a fair chance of winning the infamous PreWarCar T-shirt, then please first read The Rules under Read More and than post your answer under 'Comments'. Results published next Saturday, 15 March.

It´s a Skoda 935 from 1935.
As the Tatra models with which it could be mixed up, the engine is behind the passangers. The power is 55 HP out of ca.2 litres. In contrast to Tatra the engine is not air but water cooled. The water pipes being arranged paralell to a central tube which is part of the chassis and functions as tank. The body is light weight aluminium ca. 1100 kg. Max speed reached more than 130 km/h.
The car (the only surviving or maybe only one) is currently refurbished with Skoda and has been shown at Rétromobile in February 2014.

Skoda 935 prototype made in 1935. Two were built and just one survives. Water-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine (1995 cm3, 55 hp)in the rear. Central tube was a part of the chassis structure and originally served as fuel tank, too (not practical and a normal fuel tank was later added under the front hood). Although somewhat Tatra-like, it is a separate construction.

This is the Skoda 935, and because it was presented at the Retromobile in Paris this year you could find all in the www.
Look at the various articles p.e. zwischengas.com. The most interesting detail for me was the location of the petrol tank - in a tube which was part of the chassis.
Have a nice weekend

What is it Quiz #365
1935 Skoda 935 Prototype (1 of 2 made).

Engine : 2 litre flat four-cylinder, water cooled, 55 horsepower, (front of the rear axle).
This advanced car, weighs in at 1200 kg. with gasoline tank in a central tube in the vehicle, and is said, in many ways to surpass even the Tatra T77.
Never mass produced, only 2 were made and this 935, is the only surviving model
After its premiere at the 1935 Auto Show in Prague, the prototype changed hands several times, and in 1968 the newly-founded Å KODA Museum acquired the car.
The model is currently undergoing extensive restoration and is currently being shown at this year’s Rétromobile classic car exhibition in Paris (5 to 9 March 2014),
ŠKODA will exhibit four vintage cars from various points in the company’s history, spanning the last 119 years.
The car is due to be completed after the show .

Hi prewarcar-team!

let's try another prewar-quiz - what a marvellous and interesting car, here my solution:

Skoda 935 prototype from 1935, 2liter 4 cyl.boxer, watercooled, sv, 55 hp at 3500 rpm, 2 Zenith carburetors, engine in the back and back-wheel-drive, hydraulic brakes, central tube with wood and steel skeleton frame and aerodynamic four-door-carosserie, 6 seater, typical result of the mid-thirties aerodynamic sketches, one of the two produced cars survived, since 1968 conserved in the Skoda collection.

Well, enjoy your days - best regards from the Nahe-valley!

Wow I thought that this was dead great that it is alive but i guess now it will be in a museum after restoration ,,, anyway my answer
1935 prototype Skoda 935, two allegedly built this one survives, engine a flat four 1995 cm³ OHV water cooled unit mounted ahead of the rear axle and then in effect a mid engined car. Gearbox is a 4 speed electromagnetic cotal design with a hydraulically operated clutch powered by the motor. Chassis was based around a central tube, which also was the petrol tank. Such ground breaking designs often lead to Tatra and Skoda coming into conflict with each other regarding patents and infringements. Beautiful car, when complete will be put on display in the skoda museum

This is one of two Skoda prototypes designated Typ 935. The car, which was heavily influenced by the 1934 Tatra T77, first appeared at the 1935 Prague motor show. It featured a 1995cc, 4-cylinder, water-cooled engine, mounted ahead of and over the rear axle, unlike the rear-engined T77. The radiator was positioned at the front of the car. The 935 was designed with all-independent suspension, hydraulic brakes, a Cotal semi-automatic gearbox, and bold aerodynamic styling. The prototype is currently undergoing an extensive restoration by the Skoda museum.

1935 (not 1937!) Skoda 935 4-door aerodynamic prototype with watercooled 1995cc 4 cilinder OHV boxer engine in front (not rear!). Rear wheel drive. Backbone tube chassis that also acted as petrol tank. Featured on the Prague automobile show in 1935.

This info from the Skoda book(s) by Kralik&Kozisek: the Maragolius&Meisl book and the book on aerodynamic cars by Kieselbach are incorrect in stating that the car was rear engines and Kieselbach stated 1937.

So no web info used for this answer ;-)

Picture of the real car that survived and is now being restored by the museum.
