What is it? Quiz #372

A small fixed head sports car or should we say 'Faux Cabriolet'? For the insiders naming the marque will be easy, it's the product of some sort of an anglo-french allience, but mind you there's more to it. Not only came the cars of this make with a wide variety of engines. Also the body used to vary in many details. Any car of the make is rare, yet this coupe we have never seen before in 'the flesh'. As this is a brochure photo it is not really possible to pinpoint the exact year or precise engine configuration. But for sure you can give us a rough guess about both isues.  Gambling is allowed! Maube it is nice if you tell us what kind of engine and specs could have been part of the package. Well we leave you with this. Post in your comment at least Marque, Year and Type. Any trivial information not readily available on the web regarding this specific car, its body and engine specs will he valued highly.

The integral brake drums were certainly in use in 1926, as they are fitted to my 1926 Derby saloon.

It is a 4 cylinder Vernon-Derby. These had a side valve 961cc or a 1095cc overhead valve Chapuis-Dornier engines. An overhead valve SCAP of 1170cc was available as was a Ruby. Vernon Balls lost the British Amilcar agency and marketed the French Derby car as the Vernon Derby in Britain. This car looks like a 1928 or 1929 Chapuis Dornier engined model. The car had a 4 speed gearbox and no differential.

I hope its a Derby or Vernon Derby(british built) of around 1924/25. The french company was started by Bertrand Montet and George Goett(should be two points on the e!)
Started building cars in 1921, first ones had Harley Davidson twin´s and later 4cyl inline from Chapuis Dornier, 1925 on Ruby engines both 1100cc, 1928 on Cime straight sixes, also Salmson and S.C.A.P. engines used.
Derby also built 8cyl front wheel drive.
From the beginning very competitive.

Quiz372 I think this car is a Derby circa 1928 not a FWD, with a Ruby engine rather than a Chapuis Dornier or Scap ...The body could be built by Macquet et Galvier (it looks more like french than English) (Vernon Derby).I was an early winner(1)

Won Quiz #300.

The car is a Vernon-Derby, built by Derby between 1927 and 1936. At the 1930 London Motor Show Derby showed a two seater sportsman coupe, with a 16hp engine. They also built a sports body with the option of an 8hp 4cyl, 12hp 6cyl or a 14hp 6cyl. In 1930 a Vernon-Derby broke a land speed racing record in the 1.5L class at Monthlery, travelling 118.13mph for a mile, driven by Gwenda Stewart. Stewart then took another class record in 1934 with a 1.7L car at a speed of 147.79mph. Also entered LeMans in ’34 and ’35 with a V8!

A Derby, perhaps? Maybe a CIME engine-some were side valve sixes, a little bit bigger than the usual 1100cc, I think. But they used other 1100cc engines too.

I would guess its a Vernon Derby with an English coach built 'sportsman coupe' body possibly by Hoyal? They used a variety of proprietary engines from Chapois Dornier and other makes including four and six cylinder engines from 8hp to 14hp. They were French cars but built under English control and capital. Vernon Balls raced and sold the cars in England.

Derby, or as sold in uk Vernon-Derby, after one of three consecutive importers Vernon Balls. Chapuis-Dornier, SCAP, or Ruby engines depending on model and/or year. Fastest was Super Sports with Colette blown SCAP. Made by Mons. Montet in Courbevoie, and they made trailer hitches and such, but started with a cycle car type car in circa 1921 using WW1 surplus Harley-Davidson V-twins. Company bought by Gwenda Stewart and husband and factory used to build the racing fwd Derby Miller. All from memory and using daughtersiPad thingie as I am away from home!

Dear Editor,
Difficult to be certain. Derby, estimate 1927~1928. Possibly the 9cv. Catalogued as the “Cabriolet surbaisses, 3 places, Grand Luxe”. This model had the C.I.M.E. 6 cylinder, 4 bearing crankshaft with “Ricardo” head. Engine dimensions 62mmx90mm (1,681cc). Four speed gearbox. Semi elliptic springs in the front. Quarter elliptic in the rear completed a sporty package. Supposedly good for 110kph. Chassis length 2.76m.

Other engines in the catalogue at this time included a 60mmx86mm C.I.M.E. 6 cylinder and a 4 cylinder Chapuis-Dornier 60mmx100mm (1,095cc) and SCAP options. For short time the company offered a supercharged completion model 1,100cc good for 160kph.
