What is it? Quiz #377

This beautiful Brooklands rocket is a racer of ill fame. Developed for the 1100 cc class with complicated twin cam engineering ahead of it's time it wasn't very successful. Twin overhead cams and tubular conrods were some of the features of the car that was partially based on the equally complex production car with Italian genes.

In order to have a chance of winning the infamous PreWarCar T-shirt tell us what you know about the car which is pictured here.

1923 Newton 200 mile race car.

One of two cars commissioned by Noel Newton of Olivo Pellegatti of Milan for a Brooklands 200 mile race in 1923.

The two cars failed to start the race as the banking at Brooklands was severe enough to allow the oil to surge to one side in the sump.

The car was renamed the Newton-Ceirano in 1925 when Newton with partner Bennet becam importers for Ceirano cars.

1923 Newton 200 mile racing car. 1,100cc engine with either a single Zenith or two Claudel Hobson carburettors. John Bennett of Newton & Bennett of Manchester had business connections with the Ceirano brothers of Turin and the S.C.A.T. company. He sent his son Noel to Ceirano to investigate producing a rival to the Austin 7. Instead he spent 6-10k sterling commissioning Olivio Pellegatti building three cars, two of which seemed to be finished.Castings and gears were made by Isotta Fraschini. The cars were not finished in time for the 1923 200 mile race. The car is one of two 1100cc Newtons entered for the 1923 200 Mile Race at Brooklands but nonstarted. Nevertheless, one of these cars still exists. It was restored by Geoff Hare and subsequently passed into the ownership of Keith Taylor in the 'noughties'. It is almost certainly the only racing Newton in existance. It was discovered by Nick Sloan about 1964 in a shed in Manchester following the death of Henry Longden Oilier, owner of the Newton since 1927. It is not known whether both racing Newtons or only the car for Noel Newton to drive got to England from Ceirano in Italy where the cars were made.

1100 cc Newton, non-starter at the 1923 Brooklands 200 miles race. Long-time owner Henry Longden Ollier also participated with it unsuccessfully in Southport sand-races in the late 1920s. Designed by the young Olivio Pellegatti on comission by Noel Newton. The engine was a mere prototype, during the restoration by the 5th owner it was modified to make it more driveable.

I have won twice.
