What is it? Quiz #459

The weekend has just started! Which means.... the quiz is online! This week, it is probably not that hard. Because if you do not know the car itself, you might be able to recognize the persons in it. The photo is sent in by the person who owns a car like this (and probably the only one still around).

Can you tell us more about this important piece of history? Please leave your answer in a comment before Monday. Do not forget to use no more than 100 words. We will stockpile your account of points for the six-months-competition.

Good luck!

ZIS 110 V (from Vnedoma or oudoors) Parade Phaeton limousine of Nikita Khrushchev, the person on the left of this picture. ZIS 110 series were built by ZIL (Zavod im Likhacheva) in the Stalin factory at Moscow between 1945 and 1958, based on the 1942 Packard Super Eight. Joseph Stalin owned several Packards (at least 1 offered by Roosevelt) and that's probably the reason why the first real Soviet luxury car was based on the Packard. Rumours without evidence are that ZIL even used Packard machinery to build the 110. The cars were powered by a 6 litre, 8 cylinder engine producing 140 HP. I guess the pictured car is of 1954 or later, because these had the front central extra light.

This is a picture of an eighteen day state visit that president Nasser from Egypt made in 1958 to Russia, when he was welcomed by Nikita Chroestjov in a 1949 ZIS (Zavod Emini Stalin) 110B Cabriolet. This car was based on the prewar Packard 180. Allegations that Russia bought the deficient dies from the Packard Co, when the production line ended, has never been proved. Stalin however was a great admirer of these Packards and owned some. In 1990 one of these cars was bought by an Japenese cardealer for the sum of 121 million Shilling.

This car is a Zis 110 which was built during 15 years in the Staline factory in Moscow. In fact it is a Packard super eight (1942)but built probably after the war as Kroutchev and Nasser are its passengers.Staline was very fond of Packards and asked Roosevelt to intercede on Mrs Macauley and Christopher managers of Packard. So they sold the super eight to the Russians.

First the car: It is a ZIS (later ZIL) 110 B Cabriolet built 1946-59.
It had a 6 l straight 8 engine, which gave only 140 HP with reduced compression ratio (1/6,5 approx) therefore being suitable for poor gasoline quality. Brought the heavy 2,5 ton car to 140 km/h it is said. Basically it was a Packard 1941 design copied completely except for badge and metric screws.
Then the persons, obviously in an official state visit, hard to recognize from the foto. Is it in the middle Nasser? That could be towards 1960.

On 29-04-1958 Gamal Abdel Nasser, president of the newly formed United Arab Republic (Egypt and Syria) arrived in Moscow for an 18-day state visit. Soviet Presidium Chairman Voroshilov and First Secretary Khrushchev welcomed him. Standing in the pictured ZIL-110B (mirrored!), they drove to the Kremlin. Launched end-1945, the 110 limosine designed for the Communist elite was the product of reverse engineering of the 1942 Packard-180. Initially named ZIS-110 (Zavod Imeni Stalina), the model was rebranded as the ZIL-110 (Zavod Imeni Lichachova) when Khrushchev had denounced Stalin. The cabriolet version ZIS/ZIL-110B was produced between 1949 and 1957; about 40 cars built.

The mirrored picture shows Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser amidst Kliment Voroshilov (Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet) and Nikita Khrushchev (First Secretary of the Communist Party) in Moscow on May 05, 1958. They were driven in a ZIS 110B with the number plate MШ 16-13. It was one of around 40 phaetons out of the total production run of 2,089 ZIS 110. The 110 was a reverse engineered 1942 Packard Super Eight, built from 1946 to 1958. The company's name Zavod Imeni Stalina was changed to Zavod Imeni Likhachova (ZIL) in 1956 due to de-Stalinization.

What is it? Quiz #459
Not a Prewar car !
1946-1949 ZIS 110 B Convertible, (Joseph Stalin owner)
(reputedly, based on 1942 Packard Super 8, given by FDR to Stalin, during WWII).
Grey in colour, ZIS stands for Zavod imeni Stalina, (“Stalin Factory”, later changed to ZIL, to reflect the Former Director “Likhachova”
This quiz picture is a reversed image, which makes recognizing people difficult, but it shows Khrushchev (1953-’58), with guests, (Enver Hoxha), and another , passing the Kremlin.
Engine, 6.0L ZIS-110 I8, Transmission, 3-speed manual,

Hi Postwarclassic-Team,
Here my solution:

We see Nikita Khrushchev in a ZIS-110, built in 2038 copies from 1946 to 1958, 8cyl-in-line-engine, 6,003 cc, 140 hp, 7-seater representation-cabriolet, 6m length.
ZIS-110 was an evolution of the Packard 180 (1940-1942, eight-cylinder in-line-engine with 5,833 cc, 160 hp), built on its assembly line, which was delivered to the ZIS (Sawod Imeni Stalina, Moskau), after WW2.
The ZIS-110 retained the Packard-radiator shape, looking more modern by horizontal chrome trim and the absence of runningboards.
A variant was the ZIS-115 (4 copies) armored representation-sedan (5,280kg).
This special car here takes the single fog-light in front, actually reserved for the ZIS-115.

Best regards from the Nahe-Valley!

Packard was a much admired brand in Russia both before and after WW2, so when Roosevelt gave Stalin a Packard 180, Stalin directed that the ZIS cars built for Russian officials should copy its style. Claims that Packard sold their dies to the USSR have been proven false, since no parts are interchangeable. About 40 ZIS-110B 4-door cabriolets (as shown) were built between 1949 and 1957. The ZIS featured a 6-liter inline 8 with a 3-speed manual transmission. The photo shows Egyptian President Nasser during his May 1958 state visit to Moscow, flanked by Nikita Khrushchev and Kliment Voroshilov.
