What is it? Quiz #461

The year 2017 ended with the Christmas quiz about barn-find cars. And as we know this is of interest for a lot of people, we want to start 2018 with this type of quiz as well. What we see here is a pre-war car that is also a post-war car. Makes this no sense to you? Well, when you know what car it is; you know it does make sense. We want to know the make, type, coachbuilder, year(s) and all other info that you can give us about this car. Please leave your answer of maximum 100 words in a comment before Monday and see next week if you are the winner. Good luck!

In the early 1950s, sculptor and Bugatti-owner Jacques Brown from Paris embraced polyester as a medium for modern art. In 1954 he was commissioned to equip a 1938 Bugatti T57 chassis with lightweight aerodynamic polyester bodywork. The result was shown at the 1955 Salon de l’Automobile. Two cars were made (T57-chassis #57645 and #57723), differing in the presence/absence of air inlets underneath the headlamps. The pictured car may be identified as #57645. Chassis and body have later been separated. The chassis now bears a replica Aérolithe body. Mounted on a VW-chassis, the polyester body can be admired in Autoworld, Brussels.

Bugatti 1954/1938 type 57 by sculptor James Brown. This fibreglass creation is subject of many contradictions and guesses. We know for sure that the car was shown at the 1955 Paris Salon de l'Automobile, in 1974 it was on a scrapyard near Tours (picture) and in the '80 the chassis was re-used for another Bugatti recreation. There are doubts about the chassis used (57645 or 57723, both Letourneur et Marchand bodies),the number of cars Brown built (1 or 2) and the replacement chassis the car has now (VW floorpan or ladder type chassis). Ps. Next time I see Mr Mahy, I'll ask him what he knows and put it in an article for Prewarcar!

Pre-war, post-war, then pre-war again? In 1954, the French-born sculptor James (Jacques) Brown, designed a futuristic body for a 1938 Bugatti Type 57 chassis, using 16" wheels in place of the 18" originals. The fiberglass body saved 250 kg. Faired-in headlights were possibly influenced by Bristol 450 Le Mans race cars. An almost identical second "Bugatti Brown" was built, but there was no interest in a production run. In 2005, the Brown body that used Type 57 chassis (57645) was replaced by a loose replica of an Aerolithe. Back to prewar, in a way, The Brown body survives on a modified VW floorpan.

1938/1954 Bugatti Type 57 by Brown!
James Jacques Brown, a French artist, created this aerodynamic body using fibreglass(polyester) in 1954 and put it on a prewar 1938 Type 57 chassis. In fact he created two of them (57645 and 57723).
16 inch wheels were used instead of 18 inches.
The car was also displayed at the 1955 Salon de I 'Automobile in Paris.
The car, probably(57723), was lying at a junkyard in Tours region of France in the 1970s. It was subsequently restored and is at display at the Autoworld in Brussels.
The other car was purchased by Peter Borstel who rebodied it as an Aerolithe replica.

Bugatti designed and “built” by James-Jacques Brown, painter sculpter and cartoonist (1918 – 1991) in 1954, he managed to built two, from a material that was new in those days “fibreglass” based on a 1938 chassis of a Type 57 (#57645 and #57723). In doing so he was able to reduce the weight by 250 pounds. It was equiped with an 8 cyl engine, and was capable of doing 112 mph. There is one remaining example exhibited in a Bruxxels Car museum but the engine is missing and it is said that the floorpan is now replaced by a VW one!

The solution of prewar puzzle #461 is:
It is a Bugatti T57 chassis from 1937/38, with a fiberglass bodywork designed by the french painter and sculpturer James-Jacques Brown (1918-1991) from 1953 or 1954. Only 2 prototypes were made. The car was on display on the Paris car show in 1955, but serial production did not materialize - maybe as the design was obviously too advanced for the time.
The car had been presented on prewarcar/Postwarcar in 2015:http://www.prewarcar.com/postwarclassic/magazine/previous-features/weird-wednesday-1954-1938-bugatti-t57-coupe-by-brown-027660.html

Built in 1954 on a 1938 Bugatti Type 57 chassis by French sculptor James Jacques Brown, the aerodynamic fiberglass body allows a reduction of 250 kg; the wheels are 16” instead of 18”.
Brown made two of them (chassis #57645 and #57723). Shown at 1955 Paris Salon de l’Automobile, one body remained on the T57 chassis (probably #57723) until the 1980s, then replaced with a VW floorpan. The other is still on its Bugatti chassis.
Born in 1918 in Paris, he received a law degree and became official at the Ministry of Finance1942-1945. Then he began an artistic career.

This is a Bugatti T 57 (chassis number 57645), rebodied in 1952 by James-Jacques Brown, a French artist (1918-1991). The aerodynamic body was made of polyester, saving 250 kg weight compared to the former body. The car was displayed on the Salon de l'Automobile in Paris in 1955. Brown made a similar body with different air intakes on another Bugatti chassis (#57723), but neither one was sold. Since 2005 chassis 57645 is fitted with a replica body of the Aerolithe, while the Brown body sits on a VW floorpan now. The fate of the second car is unknown.

The body was made in fiber glass by an artist called James Brown living in Paris. It was fitted to a Type 57 Bugatti and was for the Automobile Salon in Paris 1955. The proportions are rather strange but can at best be viewed as a sort of futuristic design exercise! In the late 50ies it was owned by a Belgian Bugatti enthusiast, André deLay - at that time living in Karthago. The car was pictured on page 1 of Bugantics (Club bulletin) in 1958. The body was later removed and refitted to another chassis said to be VW! It still exists in Belgium. The Type 57 was later rebodied again with a replica Bugatti body. I have a bit of an advantage about the history as I have copies of letter exchange between Conway and deLay dated Feb. 1961 so I am not worried about winning the quiz! Am also sure you will get other similar replies! All the best. Henrik

The car for Quiz #461 is the 1955 James Brown Streamline, which is currently on display at the AutoWorld Brussels Museum. This car is essentially a Type 57 Bugatti on a Volkswagen chassis. James Brown was an artist who bodied two different Type 57 Bugatti chassis: 57723 and 57645. The body was first fitted to 57645 until 57645 was sold to Paul Koot. The body was then placed on 57723 and then given a Volkswagen chassis. It was registered in France as “4424 DU 75”.

The Brown Type 57 Bugatti - re-bodied in 1954 by artist Jacques Brown using polyester for the body, severely reducing weight and in an aerodyne style increasing the top speed of the vehicle significantly. Re-bodied from a very nice Type 57 Cabriolet (shame). Brown received great public reviews for the vehicle and is considered one of the great artists of his generation Now currently on display at Autoworld Belgium.
