What is it? Quiz #466

Sold as a Peugeot image, the good observer will immediately see that it is not. The shape of the logo indeed shows some similarity but indicates a background in weaponry, which Peugeot certainly didn't have. To find the maker of this neat little sports car, you will need to pass at least one frontier from the country where the photo was taken. Apparently, the car is the sports version of a voiturette produced in 1908. A racer version competed with some success in the important European races of the same year.

It's up to you, dear reader, to tell about the make and model, and all other relevant information you might come across during your search. Have a nice weekend. And don't forget about the rules... Your answer must be submitted before Monday, with a maximum of 100 words.

In 1869 Friedrich von Martini, engineer and co-owner of a machine factory in Frauenfeld, Switzerland, perfected the firing mechanism of the Martini-Henry rifle that was to become standard issue to the British army. When Friedrich’s sons Adolph and Max started automobile construction in 1897, the famous rifle proudly featured in the Martini logo. After two ownership changes, in 1908 the Société Nouvelle des Automobiles Martini focused on the production of a variety of 4-cylinder models, designed by technical director Charles Baehni, among which the pictured 1087cc voiturette. That year's Coupe des Voiturettes saw a Martini team victory (Souvico, Beck, Richard).

This may be a long shot but I think this is a 1908 Martini Voiturette. Martini was founded in 1860 by Friederich Von Martini a company of small arms in Frauenfeld. Car production started in 1897. In 1902, they produced a series of 30 cars with small angle V4 engines. In 1903, Martini moved to a facility in Saint-Blaise, and started car production under license of Rochet Schneider. In 1906, Martini factory was acquired by H.H.P. Deasy an English investor and produced cars, some with counter clockwise rotation engines. The 1908 racers were designed by Charles Baehni.

Dear prewarcar-team

difficult again... here my solution (= the result of my guessing)

Martini Voiturette 1908, 4 cylinder, available with 16, 20, 25 and 40 hp - Martin was the largest passenger car manufacturer in Switzerland, between 1897 and 1934 a total of 3,400 vehicles were produced, many were exported.
To demonstrate the quality was often demonstrated sporting challenges as hillclimbs etc.. In the 1st Coupe Prix of the Voiturettes in Dieppe Richard and Souvicos did not reach the finish line on the Martinis, the Martinis reached the 7th, 8th and 10th place in the 3rd Coupe des Voiturettes in Compiegne.

Best regards

This is the 1909 Martini 10/12, built in Sainte-Blaise, Switzerland, the production version of the three race cars Type V3 designed by Charles Baehni, finishing 7th, 8th and 10th at the 1908 Coupe des Voiturettes in Compiègne. They won the team prize, the Prix Delage for the best touríng car and Angelo Sonvico the Coupe Grégoire for driving the fastest four-cylinder car. Martini cars were known for their robustness: In 1912, a Martini owner in Sumatra caught a baby elephant and carried it with his Martini until the elephant tried to get hold of the steering wheel with his trunk.

Isotta Fraschini Tipo FENC of 1908. The inspiration for the Bugattis Type10 and Type 13. Also the basis of the first Aston Martin which used an Isotta chassis and subsequently led to much of the chassis design of the Bamford and Martin built side valve Aston. The marque was referred to by the late journalist and VSCC commentator Bunny Tubbs as the Risotto Frascati, along with that other illustrious marque, the Banana Squeezer.

1909 Martini 10/12. The Swiss Friedrich von Martini patented an improvement to the Peabody breech-loading mechanism used in the Martini-Henry rifle, standard issue in the British army for about 30 years in the late Victorian era - hence the rifle featured in the logo. Under his son, Adolf, the company started developing cars in 1897. From 1907 to 1910, Martini enjoyed success in voiturette racing, winning the team prize and finishing 1st, 2nd, and 4th in the multi-cylinder class at the 1908 Coupe des Voiturettes. The 1086cc sohc 4-cylinder race engine was adapted for use in the 10/12 road cars.
