What is it? Quiz #473

This week, we have a “special” in our quiz. No, it is not a boat-tailed Alvis or Riley. It is a period special. The car was built for rallying and on the photograph, you see the builder / driver of the car.

Can you tell us what “make” we are hunting for? And on what car it is based? Please give us everything you know about this car and send it in in less than 100 words before Monday the 2nd of July 2018.

Good luck and have a good weekend!

The wheels and grill suggest a late 40's to 51 Ford Prefect or Anglia. Spent all too many hours re-doing engine parts on a similar car when in high school. Much ado, with little gain. Cheers, Jack.

I’m in a bit of time trouble here so I will keep this short. I think this is one of the pre war specials built by Sydney Allard, which he did for some clients. The grill looks to belong to a Standard Flying Eight, while the rims are very much like the ones you will find on a 1938 Ford Prefect or a 7W Ten. Allard used a tuned small side valve 993cc engine to proof you didn’t had to have a large capacity engine to be competitive.

My guess is prototype Dellow constructed by Delingpole and Lowe using Ford Ten 1172cc engine and Aframe chassis. It has a door which is unusual but wheels and grille look Fordlike.

Aan de grille te zien moet het haast wel een Standard Flying Eight zijn rond 1938 maar dan met een self made body er op.
Benieuwt wie er meer over weet.

This is a Whitford Special, hand built by Ivor White. He is the tall guy leaning on the windscreen. The picture was taken at an all-night rally by the Abertillery Motor Club from Southern Wales (some other members as Fred Day, John Morgan and John Merritt can be seen on the picture). Ivor White also drove a Sunbeam-Talbot and a Ford Popular for rallyes. The pictured car was based on a British Ford with 1172 cc sidevalve engine, so it has to be an Anglia, a Prefect or a Popular chassis underneath.

The print is from the wrong side of the negative. Based on a small Ford.
