What is it? Quiz #479
This week’s quiz car drives around somewhere down under. Apparently, there is no connection with other makes of this name. This manufacturer started building cyclecars and the last model they built was a light car for two passengers. The cyclecar we see is one of the earlier models.

I recognize the car as I have had the pleasure of seeing it several times here in Queensland , Australia. It's a 1914 Twombly, type A. 12-15 H.P. four cylinder. From memory it is a friction drive and chain drive to the rear wheels. The other interesting feature I recall is the underslung frame, as well as the tandem seating arrangement.

This car is a 1914 Twombly; Model B. Twombly’s were built between 1913 and 1915. They used a water-cooled four-cylinder Driggs-Seabury engine and friction drive with a two-speed driveshaft. They also used an under-slung chassis, said to create a low center of gravity and better road handling and with a 9” road clearance. There were three body styles available in 1914; this one is the Two-Passenger Tandem, as well as the Light Delivery. Later in 1914, a Taxi body was also added.
Bore: 2-3/4” inches
Stroke: 4” inches
Wheelbase: 100” inches
Track: 38” inches

I know where you are talking about. Several years ago this car was owned by a fellow member of Brisbane Vintage Auto Club, Queensland, Australia.
It is a 1915 Twombly 2-seat (in tandem) cyclecar designed by W. Irving Twombly, manufactured by Driggs & Seabury, USA.. It has a 4 cylinder S.V. engine, 3speed sliding transmission in an underslung chassis. 1915 was the only year with this configuration. It was fun to ride "pillion".
Other vehicle is of interest. The ex Queensland Railways "Fairmont" section car (Quad) with single cylinder 2-stroke water cooled engine with integral cast hopper. Slipping belt transmission.

1914 Twombly tandem roadster, 4 cyl. 10 hp, made in New York by Willard Irving Twombly who was quoted as having said: "I cannot understand it, but I have come across those in the auto world who have expressed sentiments adverse to the cyclecar."

this is a 1914 Woods Mobilette cyclecar made in Harvey, Illinois. Watercooled 12/14 HP engine,two speed gearbox, tandem seating. Francis A Woods ran his firm from 1914 to 1916 and claimed to produce america's first cyclecar. Electic lighting, optional in 1916 was standard for 1917 but none were produced that year. Price averaged $400.

Irving Twombly started making cars in 1904, a steamer. In 1905 a gasoline model with pneumatic suspension! This 1914 Sulphur yellow type “A” Twombly tandem seated cyclecar made by Driggs-Seabury Ordinance in Sharon, PA, had a 4 cylinder 12/15 hp water cooled sv engine, speed was 50 miles p/h and 40 miles to a gallon. Transmission was by friction with two speed drive shaft and single chain drive to the rear axle giving six speeds forward and two reverse. Extras were a windshield at 12$ a speedometer at 12$ and a one man top with side curtains for 25$

aha...a 1914 Twombly ! I could tell you chapter and verse about William Irving Twombly and his motoring history from 1902 , cumulating in this underslung model , but I have an unfair advantage in owning one of the other 4 known survivors, so I exclude myself (.in fact my car provided the templates and patterns to make the body of this one). At the time it was owned by Merv Kroll in New Zealand, but I dont know if it still is.
Amazingly for an American cyclecar , one was tested by the Light Car and Cyclecar in London . Another embarked on a tour of the world....no record of a triumphant success exists !

The company folded in 1915 when the main investor , a Reverend Hodge ran out of saintly patience and wanted his money back.

This is a 1914 Twombly 10 hp tandem roadster, one of three known remaining worldwide. It was the brainchild of Willard Irving Twombly from New York, but was built at the Driggs-Seabury factory in Sharon, Pennsylvania. Twombly started building a steam car in 1904, and a gasoline car in 1905. In 1910 he presented a „Quick Detachable Car“ where the engine could be removed and the body be converted within minutes. In 1913 he started building the tandem-seater cyclecar, first with a 7 hp vee-twin engine, then with a 10 hp watercooled four-cylinder engine. For 1915 he went bankrupt.
