What is it? Quiz #486

A lovely big saloon. We do not have them that often in our weekly quiz, but this week it is up to you to tell us more about this pre-war car. The colour is very recognizable, as might the shape of the radiator be. A hint is that the manufacturer started as an engine manufacturer under a different, more well-known name. But when they started manufacturing cars, they used another engine. Can you still follow us?

If so, tell us all you know about this impressive car and even more! Good luck!

The rules

Please send in your answer in a comment, in maximum 100 words. Do this before Monday evening and do not forget to give us your sources so we can check them. See next week if you are the winner of the full 5 points in the six months competition, sponsored by Hans Compter Rare Cars.

This lovely big saloon is a Suère from about 1925 (maybe a Type D). Suère cars were built in France between 1909 and 1931, before that the company produced 'Velox' engines (not to be confused with the earlier Velox Motor Co of England, Heine-Velox, or any number of old Vauxhalls). When they started producing cars they were powered by Ballot engines.

1925 Suère Type D Berline Landaulette. License plate 112 UG 75. The quiz car can be seen at the Musée Automobile de Reims-Champagne and was part of the Philippe Charboneaux collection that started the museum 1985.
J. Suere started manufacturing Velox engines in Paris, adding automobiles in 1909, continuing small volume production until 1931.

Dear prewarcar-team,
here my solution...

Suère D from 1926. Automobiles J. Suère started in 1905 in Daumesnil/Paris manufacturing engines branded under the "Velox" name.
In 1909 the production of cars with Ballot-1 cyl.engines was started, using the name Suère. Suère disappeared around 1930/1931 from the market.
At Paris Motor Show in 1922 the model „D“, with a 20 hp, 4cyl.sv-inline-engine with 1.843 cc (corresponding to a 10CV) and 4 gears was presented, available over the years in bare chassis form, as Torpedo, as Landaulet, as truck and as seen here as Conduite interieure (=Saloon) with 1.5 m width, 3.85 m length and wheelbase 2.86 m.

Best regards from the Nahe-valley!
Fritz

This car is a 1928 Avions-Voisin, produced by an aviation pioneer, Gabriel B. Voisin. The car had a Knight-sleeve engine and it was on a monocoque chassis. My sources are numerous Voisin car pictures in my personal file and also comments on Wikipedia.

This is a 1925 Suère Type D Landaulet. Suère of Paris started car production in 1909 after already having produced Velox engines. The 10 CV puzzle car is part of the Musée Automobile Reims Champagne. This very conservative model was presented in 1921 and built until 1930, the end of Suère's production. Propelled by a Ballot four-cylinder 1872 cc engine of 22 hp, it reached 80 kph. Its price in 1925 was 25,000 Francs. Suère made the news, when the Suère Spèciale appeared at the 1926 Arpajon record week, powered by a 25-litre Lorraine-Dietrich V12 aero engine.
