Where are these two ladies waiting for?

Where and when do you think this photograph was taken? The photograph is so clear, it almost looks like a film shot… Maybe it is, we do not know. What do we see in the photograph? The two ladies standing next to the tree, are chatting. But it also looks they are waiting for something. Where are they are waiting for? Are they waiting for someone to bring their car? A taxi maybe? We also see a man. The man is wearing a long coat and a top hat. To me, he looks like a doorman. Or at least someone in service. The car that is parked on the side of the street, what make and year do you think it is?

Let’s imagine, the two ladies are waiting in front of the hotel where they stay for their car. They go out for the day. In a couple of minutes, the chauffeur who picked up the car from the parking comes with their pre-war. What make do you think it is? A classy touring car? Maybe a faster cabriolet? What type of car do you think fits these ladies? And where are they going with their car? Let your imagination go, and tell us what you think. But it must, of course, fit into the photograph.

Interesting story Michael, thank you for translating. This is possibly the only reference outside of a story I have, and a picture sent to me a couple of yrs ago. It's a long story and never mentioned at all by my dad when he was alive, but is centred on a claim that he bought the car from the Afghan palace and drove it back to England some time around 1966. The whereabouts of the car since I've never heard. Also some aspects of the story I was given by a couple of different people made some other bizarre claims... I would have ignored the story I was 1st told in fact, were it not for then someone else, to send me a picture taken in Kabul of the Horch in the background... Like I say long story and a long time ago. Lovely car though, Pls send my regards to your friend

The Horch is a sportcabriolet 1935-1938 and the doorman is standing in front of Cafe Krantzler, Kurfürstendamm 18/19, Berlin in 1938.

The perfect composition, sharpness and lighting of this photograph suggests that it is a movie still. But which movie?
Whenever I see photographs of pre war Berlin I can't help thinking what will happen to the people in the picture just a few years hence. The Grünfeld family managed to escape, millions of others did not. I admire German cars from the thirties for their style and engineering, but they remind me too much of what Germany had come to in those days to be able to own or enjoy German cars of that era.

Our dear fellow enthusiast Karl Marschhofer (82 years old) from Austria has an interesting story to share, hence I feel free to translate the gist of it it.

He and his wife used to go for a vacation in the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan in the 1960s. He does not tell us how, but in 1964 he had the opportunity to drive the Horch 853 which belonged to the King of Afghanistan (a present of the German government) on the road from Kabul to the town of Sarobi (or Surobi).

He was accompanied by his wife in their Mercedes 220 and on a long straight she accelerated to 100 kph. He did the same thing with the Horch, and if I get Karl right, the Horch managed to keep up with the much younger Mercedes...

The car is the 1937 Horch Model 853 cabriolet as shown in Biltatlas Auto Union with a two tone paint job. A similar two tone model is shown there as the 25,000 Horch eight cylinder car. The ladies are tried after shopping and one asks the other if she has time for a beer.

The car is a Horch 853 , but my guess is the owner is inside the Hotel and has asked the Doorman to " watch out for the Police " because he is parked in a no parking zone ( sign on lamp post ) that's why the man looks so apprehensive

The man wearing the coat, is probably the doorman from the hotel. He's wearing a top hat not a gibus, and the hotel uniform coat. Opera or gibus hats were often collapsible so as not to take up space when sitting down in the theatre. The car could be a Mercedes 350 or 500K grand tourer, type W29, built between 1934 and 1936. The K being ' kompressor'. This suggests that the scene may be somewhere in Germany. Before WWll, judging by the ladies' clothes.

Hello,

very nice picture ! I think the ladies are waiting in front of a hotel.
This is in the end of the 1930 years in Berlin, Kurfürstendamm.
In the left background you see the famous "F.V. Grünwald" department store (is this the correct word ? - in German: Kaufhaus),
in the middle-right background one of the famous Berlin double beck buses (Büssing ?)
The car in the foreground is definitive a Horch Cabriolet (type 853 or 853A).
The advertise on the delivery van could be "Elite Damenmoden".

Best regards from Saxony/Germany

The photo seems to have been taken across the road from the F V Grunfeld department store in Berlin, presumably outside a hotel. The date would be late 30s. Grunfeld fled to New York in December 1938.

Hello It's the first time I write to you, mostly to thank you for your web page, I have bought two cars through it: a 1952 Morgan to Christophe de Fauconval, (Mecaniciport.com), and a 1932 Auburn to Henny Kenis, (Retrolegends.nl).
I can't imagine a story about these women because each time I try to , I start thinking of me driving that car. Who could have that 1938 Mercedes 540k cabriolet A!.
It's parked in Berlin, in front of the super Art Deco leinenhaus Grünfeld department store.
Those terrible days for us to come in Europe.

The cab looks to be a Checker, so I would say It is in the U.S. and the beautiful DHC is a no brainer.

Well, this is an easy one - the photo was taken in the late 1930s in the German capital of Berlin in front of the Kaufhaus F.V. Grünfeld (established in 1889). I guess the two pretty mature ladies are discussing their chances to get into the Horch 853 Sportcabriolet which is parking behind them - the owner was a notorious womanizer back then always eager to impress his female co-driver with the sheer power of his straight-eight...
