It's not only Al Gore with his 'Inconvenient Truth’; the new European legislation can make the life of car enthusiasts inconvenient as well. German city governments may ban all non complying cars this year already (check earlier feature). And all European cities can do the same if they want. So what's the next step? Park a few of our cars in a museum and scrap all others? Don't panic! Bas de Voogd reminded us some time back of Henry Ford's concept that a farmer should be able to grow his own fuel. All Model T and Model A Fords will take environmental friendly Bio-ethanol without any problem (by the way also your prewar Cadillac and your Bugatti T35 will take it). Because seeing is believing we decided to bring the old idea back to reality. So we picked up a few litres of Ethanol (E85) from Tamoil. Theo Castricum cleaned out the tank of his standard new Dutch delivery 1929 Model A Tudor, dropped in the ethanol, pushed the starter and V-r-ooooom!, that was it. No changes, no problems. Ford Holland was deeply impressed and decided to show the car in their eco oriented stand at the Dutch version of 'Detroit', the Auto-RAI. UPDATE by editor: a new chain of bio-fuel filling stations had opened in the North of Holland, check Delta Oil. Germany has a number of ethanol stations and France is planning to open a few hundred very soon...., so we are close to the point that one can drive through all Europe making use of bio-ethanol.
