Italian racing in Eritrea-Ethiopia.

By Bart Kleyn (+ a note by Simon Moore): Italians love racing and in the few years they colonised Eritrea and Ethiopia they did bring their hobby and their cars along as can be seen in the 1938 Christmas race in Asmara (Eritrea), main photo. After the defeat from the British many cars remained there. A British serviceman bought the car in the middle of the grid for £ 40,-. When he was transferred to Addis Abeba he sold the car. In 1952 the car had undergone some changes but was still racing in Eritrea (below, second photo from left). Eventually this car made it to Ethiopia. It was discovered in the desert  in the early sixties. Another 8C with Eritrean roots never made it to Ethiopia (below, last photo to the right). But this may change during the coming Via Flaminia Coloniale in November 2013. We even came across a 6C with a plate reading "Campionato Eritreo  Montagni; 1951; Romeo Paulo; A.C.E." (see photo of inscription). Tuesday the 11th at 8 p.m.  there will be a presentation about this extraordinary rally at the Royal Automobile Club. Hello, my name is Simon from England. I am trying to locate and make contact with a car club in Asmara, Eritrea. If anybody knows of any car clubs, and better still if you have a contact email (and website perhaps), I would be very grateful if you could share this with me please.

Many thanks in advance and kind regards,
Simon

Hello Simon,

I can help connect you with the Car Racing Club in Asmara or the Heritage Department as they both follow the racing history closely.

Please send me an email—it should show once you open my message.

Best,
Tes

Hello, my name is Habtom Gezae, and I'm here to ask a question regarding my uncle Berhane Fashion. In the 1950s and 1960s, he rode a motorcycle. I started looking for my Uncle Berhane Fashion's history, but I was unable to locate anything. So, how can I find out my uncle's past? I need your assistance to learn my uncle's history of riding an Eritrean motorcycle in the 1950s and 1960s.

my grandpa bought a lancia astura that was heavily modified when he was in kagnew station in Asmara in 1957-58. I have a photo of him and his friend scrunched up into it, trying not to fall out of the cut down doors haha!

In 1968 I bought three racing cars in Asmara, an 1100 Maserati Monoposto, an 8C Alfa Romeo 'special' and a Ferrari Mondiale. Recently Simon sent me a picture of these cars on the grid in perhaps 1955. (same place as your main picture). Years ago I met an American who bought a very original Alfa Monza in
Asmara in the early 1960's. There was a big American base nearby so we were lucky to find anything!
