Introduced in 1932, the MG J2 Midget quickly established itself as one of the most appealing small British sports cars of the pre-war period. Light, purposeful and delightfully uncomplicated, its compact two-seat body, cycle wings and lively character came to define the traditional MG sportscar.

This attractive example was first registered in Wolverhampton in 1933, having been supplied through Attwoods, the city’s principal MG dealer. It carries chassis number J3301 and engine number 2164AJ, with its body recorded as having been produced by Car Bodies. A sympathetic and comprehensive restoration was undertaken between 1998 and 2000. The engine was rebuilt by noted specialist Barry Foster and is paired with an F-type gearbox. Further mechanical work included the fabrication of an exhaust manifold and substantial attention to the braking system. This incorporated new 12-inch front brakes, new eight-inch rear drums and a replacement brake cross-shaft fitted with a J4-type inboard brake-adjuster assembly. Additional sporting details include a J4 steering wheel and a chronometric rev counter, complemented by a water-temperature gauge and eight-day clock. The seats were produced by Colbourne, while a fitted tonneau cover provides useful weather protection. A full set of Blockley tyres completes the purposeful period appearance.

Finished in traditional British Racing Green with matching painted wire wheels and a green interior, this J2 presents as a particularly charming example of the archetypal pre-war British sports car. Its compact proportions, low seating position and exposed mechanical detailing give it considerable visual appeal.

Importantly, the MG is accompanied by an exceptional history archive comprising a substantial history file and boxes of paperwork, invoices and bills. This unusually extensive documentation provides valuable supporting information relating to the car’s history, maintenance and restoration.
